Jailed solicitor caused ‘colossal harm’ to profession through scams

first_imgAn experienced solicitor who used his status to give credence to illegal investment schemes has been thrown out of the legal profession. Stephen Pickard was jailed for a total of eight years in November 2016 after helping to put together a scheme to convince investors to pay money into a Ponzi-style private placement programme.  He was found guilty of two offences of fraud by false representation and concealing criminal property. The investment opportunity, described in court as ‘all lies’, never existed and Pickard knew this was the case, using his role to let people believe it was genuine. The Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal heard the solicitor of 32 years, ‘provided respectability’ through the scheme and ‘dragged through the mire’ the name of his former employer, Yorkshire firm Lupton Fawcett, which played no part in the fraud. In sentencing at Leeds Crown Court, His Honour Judge Kearl QC said Pickard was essential to the scheme in order to claim to provide full and proper due diligence and to give a history to the trading – the solicitor was the ‘lieutenant’ of the main defendant, by whom he was paid. The tribunal heard Pickard had been contacted in prison and he did not wish to contest disciplinary proceedings against him. He was found to have acted through ‘greed and desire for personal financial gain’, having been a willing participant in fraudulent activities in which members of the public lost significant amounts of money. His case had caused ‘colossal harm’ to the legal profession in general, the conviction leading to headlines in the media such as ‘another lawyer helps fraudsters by giving credibility to their scam’.  Pickard was struck off the roll of solicitors and ordered to pay £2,439 costs. Following his conviction, Lupton Fawcett emphasised that the firm was not involved in any way in Pickard’s offences, which were carried out without its knowledge. Once the firm became aware of his conduct, it reported the matter to the Solicitors Regulation Authority and Pickard departed shortly thereafter.last_img read more

Vicente del Bosque calls up Nolito, Alvaro Morata, Jose Callejon and Ignacio Camacho to latest Spain Squad

first_img Diego Costa, though, was not named. He has struggled with his fitness this season and Del Bosque, in agreement with Jose Mourinho, felt the Chelsea forward would benefit from a period of rest. Juventus’ Alavaro Morata, Napoli’s Jose Callejon and Malaga’s Ignacio Camacho were also given the nod. There was also a return to the fold for Real Madrid midfielder Isco. 07/11/2014 Upd. at 17:42 There was a healthy Barcelona presence in the squad, with Gerard Pique, Jordi Alba, Marc Bartra, Sergio Busquets and Pedro all included; Del Bosque said: “We’ve called Pique because he is willing to come, it is not an imposition.” Andres Iniesta and David Silva were among those to miss out through injury. Celta Vigo’s Nolito, whose back-heel set up the goal in his side’s win over Barcelona last weekend, had been tipped to be involved and that proved the case when Del Bosque announced the 23-man list on Friday afternoon. Sam Marsden Spain play Belarus in Huelva on November 15 in European Championships qualifier, with a friendly against World Cup winners Germany in Vigo scheduled for November 18. Espanyol goalkeeper Kiko Casilla maintained his place as well. Vicente del Bosque has included four new faces in his squad for Spain’s upcoming matches against Belarus and Germany. Galaxy’s Edge Store Preview: Jewels of Bith

first_imgShare This! We’re counting down the days until the official opening of Walt Disney World’s Galaxy’s Edge with a look at some of the sights that you’ll see in this new land. Shopping is a major part of this new land, and the best place to visit is the Market, which has several merchants. Next up, we’re showing you some of the merchandise you can find at Jewels of Bith.To be honest, when I visited Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland, I couldn’t figure out where Jewels of Bith was, because I was expecting a collection of jewelry. Galaxy’s Edge does have jewelry for sale, both in Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities and, unusually enough, in Droid Depot. Why some of that doesn’t appear in a store called Jewels of Bith is beyond me. What you will find in Jewels of Bith is the equivalent of the airport souvenir shop, with fridge magnets, luggage tags, post cards, t-shirts, and more. By far, it is my least favorite shop in the Market, and yet I do admit I bought items there on my first visit in California. (Much of the merchandise in Florida appeared to be the same or similar, and there’s only so many fridge magnets of Black Spire Outpost one needs!)Here’s what you can expect in this shop. What are your thoughts about Jewels of Bith? Did you spy anything that you’d like to buy on your trip to Batuu? Let us know in the comments.last_img read more

Apple’s iWork Goes (Partly) Online

first_img8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Tags:#Apple#news#NYT#Product Reviews#web Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Apple today announced an online component to its iWork productivity suite. This, however, is not the rumored online version of iWork we were hoping for, as it only allows you to share documents online through iWork.com. After you share a document through the newly released iWork ’08 desktop software, your friends and co-workers can comment and leave notes on your Keynote, Pages, or Numbers documents, though the documents themselves can’t be edited online. Apple is releasing this as a free beta today, and Phil Schiller announced this as “the beginning of a great new service,” which leads us to believe that Apple is indeed working on a more advanced online version of iWork.According to Schiller, iWork.com will work on all the major browsers, including Safari, Firefox, and Internet Explorer. Documents are not only viewable online, but can also be downloaded.Apple also announced a Keynote Remote iPhone app, that will be available in the App Store for $0.99, as well as major updates to its iWork and iLife suites. Chalk Talk: Three Things to Take Away From the Spring Game

first_imgThe Oklahoma State spring game gave a glimpse of OSU fans what they could see in the upcoming 2017 season. Although the game plans of most spring scrimmages are fairly conservative, only using a handful of base plays, there were still some notable things that one might have noticed during the game. Here are three most noteworthy play observations in the Spring Game.Three Down/Four DownThe OSU defense has committed to using a more varied personnel in 2017. The Cowboys used some three-down fronts last season, and the recent hiring of Brian VanGorder has solidified their commitment to three-down sets. The Cowboys have clearly worked on three-down formations in the offseason. They used a nickel set on multiple occasions with the rush backer on the left side taking place of the end (most defenses will put their best pass rusher on the quarterback’s blind side). They also used a nickel set with two rush backers on each side and three lineman spaced between. This is a good sign for Cowboy fans. Last season, they used three-down sets conservatively, bringing it out in likely pass situations. There was little variety, but it makes sense considering they started using it mid-season. Now, they’ve added variety, and it’s not just for prevent situations anymore. Expect three-down sets to play a bigger role in the Cowboy defense next season.Y AlignmentA number of Cowboy fans thought that the OSU offense would minimize the cowboy back position in 2017 considering how many talented receivers they have. If the Spring Game was any indication, it’s not necessarily that the Cowboys aren’t using the cowboy back anymore.Rather, they’re adding more variation to the back’s alignment. The Orange team, for example, lined cowboy back Keenan Brown all over the field, often playing in the backfield, as a tight end and as a flexed receiver all in the same drive. The Black team did the same with Dawson Bassett on the first couple of drives. The Cowboys showed formations with the tight end flexed in the slot in both two-by-two and trips formations; in the latter, the cowboy back aligned on the line of scrimmage in both the inside slot, known as “trey” alignment, and in the outside slot, known as a “trio” alignment (terminology varies). When used correctly, flexed tight ends can be a headache to cover. If the strong-side linebacker plays the flexed end head up, then he leaves the box susceptible to the run. But if he stays in the box, then he has to leave the end uncovered before the snap which gives the offense an advantage in the passing game.If done correctly, this formational versatility should give opposing defenses headaches throughout the upcoming season, especially considering how quickly the Cowboys operate. Four-receiver sets are effective, but the use of a tight end in this fashion has its advantages as well.QB Run GameThe Cowboys’ run game looked slightly different than last season’s in the spring game. It almost appeared as if they reverted back to their 2015 ways. They put a big focus on the outside zone out of the shotgun, with no use of the pistol (which, as we’ve talked about before, allows backs to utilize their vision better in comparison to the shotgun). They used inside runs with a wing tight end, but there weren’t any available running lanes because of the extra linebacker in the box due to the tight end’s presence. Their only successful play was an inside zone read. Mason Rudolph converted a 4th-and-1 with it in the game’s first drive, and the play was used in the latter half of the game to open up holes up the middle for the running backs. This play is an example of something the Cowboys never do enough of, and that’s to run against a six-man box. Yes, cowboy backs can help in the run game, but they can also help spread a defense out as well. This play also signifies the possibility of using Mason Rudolph in the run game more in 2017. Could we see more plays like this? That’s currently unclear, but the Cowboys consistently used this play throughout all four quarters. The Spring Game in its entirety was fairly lackluster, as OSU fans should come to expect. Gundy isn’t one to show too much before the season starts, and rightfully so. Although the scrimmage itself wasn’t all that special, the game was telling of what we could see in the future.
