7 February 2011A rain delay in the final of the SA Tennis Open at Montecasino in Johannesburg proved to be no obstacle to South Africa’s Kevin Anderson in his pursuit of the cup and the US$442 500 (nearly R3.2-million) pay cheque.Anderson faced India’s Somdev Devvarman, who refused to give up without a fight. Anderson came back from a disappointing first set loss to dominate the rest of the match, making the most of his hometown advantage to finish off Devvarman 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.The win has catapulted Anderson to an all-time career high in the world rankings, moving him up 16 places from 56 to 40. Devvarman’s impressive performance throughout the tournament also earned him a jump up the charts, landing him at 80.Devvarman was responsible for ousting the remaining South African players, wild cards Rik de Voest and Izak van der Merwe, in the quarter- and semifinals respectively. He defeated De Voest 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-1 and swept through Van der Merwe’s defence 6-2, 6-4.Anderson took on Slovakian Karol Beck in Friday’s quarterfinals and made easy work of the game, finishing 6-3, 6-1. In Saturday’s semifinals, he tussled with Adrian Mannarino from France, coming back from a tie-break loss in the first set to overwhelm the Frenchman 6-7(3), 6-0, 6-4.In the doubles segment of the tournament, James Cerretani from the USA and Adil Shamasdin from Canada stood firm to take the trophy. They defeated the American duo of Scott Lipsky and Rajeev Ram 6-3, 3-6, 10-7.Source: City of Johannesburg
Ajinkya Rahane and Murali Vijay put on a century opening stand to lay the platform for a 62-run victory over Zimbabwe and a series win in the second one-day international at Harare Sports Club on Sunday. After the tourists were sent in to bat, the pair put on 112 for the first wicket as India posted 271 for eight in their 50 overs.Zimbabwe found quick scoring difficult from the start of their reply and were eventually bowled out for 209 with an over remaining in their innings.Captain Rahane took 83 balls for his score of 63, while Vijay managed just three boundaries, two of them sixes, as he top-scored for India with 72 from 95 balls. They were the only two half-centuries of the innings and after they departed India lost wickets at regular intervals on the slow pitch.Zimbabwe seamer Neville Madziva posted career best figures in all List A matches of four for 49 in his 10 overs. The home side stumbled in their reply and when their century hero from Friday’s narrow four-run loss, skipper Elton Chigumbura, was dismissed for nine they had slumped to 43 for three in the 11th over.Opener Chamu Chibhabha provided lone resistance with a neatly compiled 72 from 100 balls before he was run out by a direct hit from Rahane.Experienced spinner Harbhajan Singh, who has returned to 50-over international cricket after an absence of four years for this tour, bowled tidily to register one for 29 in his 10 overs. But the pick of the Indian bowlers was medium pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar with four for 33 from his allotted overs.advertisementThe final match of the series will be staged at the same venue on Tuesday, before the teams play two T20 games starting on Friday.
