Kolkata: Police personnel of Tollygunge police station were assaulted after they intercepted an errant biker for allegedly driving in drunken state on Sunday night.Later, the police initiated a suo moto case on charges of assaulting and preventing police personnel from discharging their duties against several persons. The Kolkata Commissioner of Police has sought a report in this regard. According to the police, on Sunday night, officers were on naka-checking duty in front of Menoka theatre. Around 11pm, the police intercepted a biker and found that he was driving in drunken state. After being taken to the police station, Ranajoy called some of his friends and claimed that police were harassing him without any reason. Soon, more than 100 people gathered outside of Tollygunge police station and started agitating. Despite repeated requests by the police, the crowd refused to leave the spot. According to a source, to bring the situation under control, Ranajoy was released after police imposed a fine on him. But, this did not help much. The mob started pushing police personnel inside the police station. When some of the police personnel tried resisting the move, a few people from the mob assaulted several police personnel. A constable and an officer was assaulted. They even tried to tear the uniform of a policeman. While, the police were getting assaulted a few of the accused persons went to the chamber of Officer in Charge’s (OC) room and verbally abused him. It was also alleged that a lady police personnel, who was trying control the women, was assaulted. Around 1:30 am, a huge contingent of police went to Tollygunge police station and brought the situation under control. Though a suo moto case has been initiated, no one was arrested till Monday.
