first_img Share: GO By Terry Otto, Columbian staff writer Published: March 28, 2019, 6:00am Share: Trout fishing in local lakes has been good.A few steelhead are being caught on the Cowlitz River.Spring Chinook fishing is improving in the mainstem Columbia, although effort has lagged behind previous years. A few springers are being caught in the Willamette River.Walleye fishing is good in the Bonneville Pool, and excellent in the John Day pool.Salmon/SteelheadBonneville Dam — Sixteen spring chinook have crossed Bonneville as of Wednesday.Willamette Falls — Fourteen spring Chinook have crossed over the falls.Cowlitz River — I-5 Bridge downstream: 64 bank rods kept eight steelhead. Above the I-5 Bridge: 34 bank rods kept 20 steelhead and released two steelhead. Sixty-one boats/181 rods kept 101 steelhead and released 10 steelhead. Kalama River — 28 bank anglers had no catch. Two boats/three rods had no catch.Lewis River — 17 bank anglers released one steelhead.Wind River — One boat/two rods had no catch.TroutHorseshoe Lake — 2,900 rainbows were planted at 2.9 per pound.SturgeonBonneville Pool — Two bank anglers had no catch; 14 boats/39 rods kept nine legal sturgeon, released five legal sturgeon and 107 sublegal sturgeon.John Day Pool — 52 bank anglers kept two legal sturgeon, released five sublegal and six oversize sturgeon. Eight boats/10 rods released one sublegal sturgeon.WalleyeBonneville Pool — 17 boats/32 rods kept 14 walleye and released six walleye.John Day Pool — 47 boats/96 rods kept 93 walleye and released 28 walleye.BassBonneville Pool — One boat/two rods released one bass.John Day Pool — Five boats/10 rods kept 1 bass and released 17 bass. Beacon Rock to Bonneville Dam is open to bank angling only. Fishing for salmon, steelhead, and shad is closed From Buoy 10 at the mouth of the river to Warrior Rock.Effective April 1, spring Chinook angling will be open from Tower Island power lines upstream to the Oregon/Washington border above McNary Dam, plus the banks between Bonneville Dam and Tower Island power lines.White sturgeon retention is closed from Buoy 10 upstream to Bonneville Dam, and in The Dalles Pool but remains an option for catch-and-release fishing.Bonneville, and John Day pools are open to the retention of white sturgeon until quotas are reached (under permanent regulations).
